1ST HALF OF TERM


Whizz  Bang Pop!
This is the chemistry section, where
pupils explore pH, aids, alkalis and neutralising substances. There will also be
revision of chemical compounds, atoms and elements

2ND HALF OF TERM


Scary smashing Solar system Space and Transistion time
Pupils  learn about space and exploration, and more detailed ideas of how the solar
system is moving and developing. 
Pupils will learn about stars and planets, and produce a project to the class.  Included in this is
Pressure, forces, gravity, moments and levers.

I.C.T - SUMMER

Public Information Systems:

In this unit pupils collate data from a variety of sources to develop a daily information service about weather. They will use a range of sources, e.g. a school weathers station, measurements, satellite (remote sensing), the internet, and other files.

2nd Half of Term

Information: reliability, validity and bias:

In this unit pupils use the internet to gather information on a particular topic, collate it and present it from a particular viewpoint.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - SUMMER

Food:
We will be researching and cooking foods from around the world, pupils make stir fry, pizza, burgers, lasagna. Pupils also learn about special diets, costings, and timing of recipes. Pupils then design and make an Italian dish of their choice.  1 term

Textiles: We will also be experimenting with fabrics and constructing a recycled ‘Rubbish Monster’ in Textiles.           ½ term

Resistant Materials: Copper – metalworking. Pupils are shown how to join, bend and construct with metal. Pupils are then given a selection of jigs a pieces of copper to enable them to design and make an individual item. Product typically made include; candle holder, trophy, sculpture.          ½ term

Graphics: Pupils are introduced to 3-D drawing techniques (isometric, one point perspective), shading and tone. Pupils design a new shop front and make a ‘mock up’ their shop.           ½ term

Product Design: Pupils work in teams to design a new company. They then select an appropriate material to make promotional material for their company. Products designed and made include; promotional DVD, keyring, sweet wrappers, pencil toppers. Pupils then ‘pitch’ their company to a panel of guests.     ½ term

Homework: Pupils undertake a research project based on Famous Designers.

Please be aware that pupils are in groups and work on a rotational basis, only completing one or two of the above areas per term.

HISTORY - SUMMER

Year 8 will be looking at Queen Elizabeth I, the causes of the English Civil War, before looking at the sinking of the Titanic right at the end of the term.

Finally students will look at the Global Fashion Industry. Focus will be on the growth and impacts of global industries, how they operate and investigating who are the winners and losers. Students will look at the role of TNCs and the impact they have on the growth of industry on LEDCs.

ART - SUMMER

Year 8
Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He was influenced by such painters as Sesshu, and other styles of Chinese painting. Born in Tokyo, Hokusai is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji . Pupils will look at the artist Hokusai. They will make a water colour study based on the artists work and then begin to develop a printmaking tile based on their research. They will learn the technique of press print.

MUSIC - SUMMER

Year 8 

* Film Music: In this unit it puts pupils in the position of a film soundtrack composer and explores the challenges and devices used in film soundtrack composition.  Pupils begin by exploring leitmotifs and how they have been used to represent certain characters or situations in films, before exploring how themes have been used in film soundtracks and performing a number of “James Bond” themes.  Pupils compose their own soundtrack to the new James Bond film trailer “Skyfall” learning how film composers use cue sheets to create music to fit with exact timings.  Pupils then explore storyboards as another device used

by soundtrack composers, creating a soundtrack for a particular film genre before exploring how musical clichés have been used in silent films and cartoon soundtracks.

* Samba Music: In this unit introduces the polyrhythmic style of Latin American Samba and identifies its roots in African and Spanish/Portuguese music.  Concepts revised and visited include the importance of a steady beat/pulse as a foundation of rhythmic music, looping rhythms, polyrhythms, call and response and improvisation. Through performing Samba pupils will learn the sounds and understand the roles of each instrument used in Samba and experience the exhilaration and physical impact of percussion ensemble music.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
P.E - SUMMER

Year 8 – Athletics events:- running, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot, discus and javelin.  These will be taught mainly as single gender.  Rounders for girls and cricket for boys.
